Mobile Device Addiction In Youth

  What Did I Learn?

There are many facts I have learned from researching about technology addiction. I have learned that the addiction acts just like any other addiction and has many affects on a child or teen’s brain and body. If a child gets access to a mobile device too early the addiction can start to form and cause negative effects in the workplace. A mobile device grants access to a ceaseless platform of knowledge and services however, that instant gratification is what creates the addiction and causes negative habits. I also learned that our generation is being shaped by technological advancements that cause the young children in our community to feel sometimes obligated or pressured into getting a phone really early.

Research Process

When I first started researching this topic I knew that technology addiction was getting more recognition due to its growing outreach to a younger demographic. I was expecting to see blogs run by parents who think their kids have a problem but I’ve seen companies like McAfee and news companies like CBS report on the ongoing problem. Additionally, almost every source I went to focused on young adults and how easy it is for them to get addicted. However, I found it really interesting that I saw more websites showing tips on how to stop the addiction but hardly anything showing how to prevent the addiction in the first place.

Importance

Phones have been such a useful gadget that we have benefited from immensely. However, all of us are susceptible to addiction especially one that is caused by something from our everyday lives.  I believe it is important for parents to be aware of how addictive the devices are and prevent children who are too young to see it as a pacifier. My belief is, if technology use is regulated then, it can prevent technology abuse.

Discrimination

I have decided to do my blog on “How people with disabilities are still discriminated against in the work place”. I want to explore cases that have been brought to the supreme court, news articles, and text that discuss why this form of discrimination is still happening even after all the ADA regulations and laws regarding fair employment policies. I choose this because I want to work with adults with disabilities as a Life l coach and feel that this will help me to better understand why companies and small town businesses are hesitant to employ people with any type of disability. I hope to capture an audience that has the same concerns as I do and are wondering why this discrimination is still occurring in the 20th century.

I will only be addressing other court cases involving disability discrimination in the work place both here in the United States as well as a case that took place in France.

I March of 2003, the “U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) announced the settlement of a disability discrimination lawsuit against Lincoln, Nebraska-based Voss Electric Company (Voss) for $91,250 on behalf of a former worker with bipolar disorder. This lawsuit came about when a long-time employee of Voss needed in-patient care due to his bipolar disorder. Rather than Voss allowing their former employee the additional time off he needed, which was recommended by his physicians, “Voss fired him by taping a termination letter to the front door of his home” (EEOC.gov). In the way Voss handled the terminatio

n of their former employee and the fact that they fired him because of effect his mental disability had on him; Voss violated the ADA of 1990. Under that act all people with disabilities are entitled to accommodations by the work place in which they work at. This is just another example of how so often, companies, whether they be big or small only have the interest of their companies in mind and not their employees. The ADA has clearly started the regulations that all businesses must follow. Why are so many companies still continuing to fight these laws?

I am Yuki.  I can’t believe my father was taken away.  I don’t even understand what’s going on.

Yuki Chan: I don’t understand why they would take father away! I know that something happened with pearl harbor but I don’t understand what any of that has to do with us or father. These FBI men are treating us unfairly, they won’t even let me go out to see my friend Mimi.

Chapter 6: Home is a Horse Stall, pages 49-58

Ken: It’s dirty out here, i can’t have any privacy while going to the bathroom, they have us like animals here. They have us living like horses with the horse like stalls. The food was gross never have I seen this food but i had to eat what i can to survive in this camp. The only positive thing about this place is that they allowed us to deliver our belongings to make it feel more like home.

Chapter 11:  A Home in the Desert, pages 93-102

In this Chapter Yuki was in a train where she hate being in she says it was “hot and stuffy”  and to make it even more worse the water ran out from everyone drinking water due to the hotness. While in the train Emi  felt like she lost her energy, didn’t feel like doing anything. Later in the chapter she faints I think from dehydration or from heat prostration.

Having Yuki around us so much is very comforting because we know that she is very concerned with emis health. Even grandpa has be taking her along to places that he would usually take Emi too. I have made an egg yolk essence to help her get better.

First Semester Reflection

Reflect on your learning from this semester

This semester I learned a lot more about politics in fact, due to the election this semester seemed to be the most politically based semester in all of my classes. From Kaepernick sitting down during the national anthem to Trump winning the election this semester has been a roller coaster of politics. I also gained a greater knowledge of the electoral college and the importance of voting.

What did you like/not like?

I didn’t like the repeating it was very repetitive. Maybe it was my point of view but the Kaepernick issue felt a lot longer than it needed to be. This could be the case due to the fact that we had an assignment that made us reflect and “respond” to his actions in every class for a couple days. I did like how we focused on current events as they unfolded and the effort of the teachers even through the difficulties of the abrupt schedule changes.

In what ways did you grow?

Hmm I’m not sure this question is ripe enough yet. Maybe the true question is how have our teachers seen us grow? I haven’t really noticed much change if any in myself however I have felt a yearning for improvement in some areas. If I did grow anywhere I believe endurance or perseverance is something I might’ve improved.

What insights did you gain?  About yourself or others or our community…

I learned a lot about my peers during a specific event, the voting. Whenever politics is introduced into a conversation it is almost an invitation to start and argument due to the controversial nature that is politics. What I noticed which startled me a little was the impact that social media had on my peers in regards to the politicians. They could not see the façade of media and many if not most did not research the propositions. This made me wonder if our community today reacts the same way, it made me reconsider how great the media’s role is in politics in our “modern” country.

Discussion Post

Should it be mandatory (required) to vote?

I believe it should not be mandatory to vote for “everyone”. To prevent any confusion in this discussion post I am against making voting mandatory. Personally my opinion is more than just black and white. Nevertheless, I believe that making voting( a right reserved only for American citizens) mandatory would not increase how many voters actually vote significantly. As Pildes states in the article “Should Voting Be Mandatory?” “ Americans take their freedoms very seriously, and the idea of requiring them to do something – especially something as important as voting – runs deeply against the grain of our political culture.” Making voting mandatory is a system that works on paper but there are so many things needed to improve a system that would be ultimately broken when it is applied.

Before any attempt to make voting mandatory we should really step back and analyze the situation in order to see the real reason why so much of the Voting Eligible Population (V.E.P.) aren’t voting. Pildes briefly explains and contributes a valid point by proposing the following “A healthy democracy requires competitive elections in which voters perceive something meaningful is at stake. Make that happen and increased voter population will follow.” In conclusion, Implementing an imperfect system that mandates American citizens to vote is not the way to increase voter population. It is up to the candidates to have a better arsenal when facing important SDGs to improve voter population.

What Is Financial Wellness?

There are many signs that show your Financial Wellness. The University of New Hampshire states that being financially healthy learning how to manage your money and establishing a personal budget, not living beyond your means and learning to not let money be the driving force of your life. Also they state that you should donate some of your money, if possible, to a cause you believe in, make a plan to pay back your student loans and not getting into credit card debt. Finally try to pay off the entire balance each month to avoid interest. Thinking long term – set up a savings account. Basically not living paycheck to paycheck and having enough to donate. Not just earning a lot of  money but responsibly keeping and saving it.

What have I Observed?

credit-vs-cash-1024x682
http://blog.inspirefcu.org/checking-accounts/card-vs-cash-check/

I speculated that using bills vs a card would increase the rate of my spending because I would be more tempted to do small or impulsive purchases. To put this into practice I transferred my money into my checking account. During the process I came to realize that I cannot purchase pancakes in class which was a weekly expense. That same day I also had to turn down students selling candy which I wouldn’t have been able to do when I had the opportunity to purchase it. These small and seemingly unimportant expenses actually started to save me a lot of money. Some might argue that using the bank also has small expenses in the fine print such as; charging for using an account, charging for the card and charging for writing checks. In my defense the bank I use is a Non-profit credit union which in a nutshell is a bank unlike those big banks (ex. Wells Fargo) doesn’t charge those small fees. However, most of those banks are group specific for example Navy Federal Credit Union is exclusive to those in the Military and their families. I have learned many things, I’ve felt a new sense of responsibility and have a higher knowledge that will benefit me in my future.

What Is Financial Wellness To Me?

My mother is a big influence on what Financial Wellness means to me. Since I was a little kid my mom has always worked with Finances. She has taught me a lot about saving and investing. I’ve been raised with the knowledge of how banks work and how to responsibly handle and save my money. As a kid I would not get a weekly allowance, I would get an allowance of 15 dollars every month or two. I always wanted to waste it all on toys and candy however, I was taught to save because I will want to buy something expensive and I would need to be able to confidently purchase it knowing that I won’t go bankrupt or in debt. These and many more practices are what I have learned now, will apply in the near future and will pass down when I have kids of my own.

Small Business plan

SC Infrastructure was designed to be a for-profit company dedicated to improving San Diego County’s infrastructure, while providing rehabilitation skills to those who want to turn over a new leaf. By providing people with a second chance to develop a path in life we are benefiting our community’s economy while improving our infrastructure. In order to truly benefit our consumers, we have developed special financing to encourage job growth and infrastructure improvement, necessities which are being looked over because of cost.

Did you know the San Diego area was ranked eighth-worst in the nation in terms of bad roads? Did you know that a badly repaired or poorly made road or sidewalk  can do irreversible damage to a city’s reputation and can cause lawsuits costing both time and money? Having worked for over 10 years as a professional architect specializing in infrastructure  means I’ve built my reputation on the longevity of my projects and builds. I can say that not only are my clients happy with what I’ve done for them, but my repairs and projects have gone on to win national and international awards. I have worked hand in hand with some of the biggest cities with many projects and out of over 300 contracts, have had only one project redone, and that was as a result of a new construction not poor repairs. There are other companies that are already working for San Diego County and a third party company can raise some concerns but we are very credible and work to not only repair the infrastructure but to help fix our communities. We do this by hiring ex-convicts with small felonies to allow them to give them a second chance at working for the community. I’d like to bring that award winning history to your city. Would you be willing to meet with me for 20 minutes to go over a loan and 10% of my company to help make sure your city as brilliant as clean as it can be?

Carlos Perez’s and Sabrina James’ idea for SC Infrastructure stemmed from the need of their own local community, the city of Vista. The city of Vista’s local infrastructure concerned them as citizens, parents, and members of the community. They ultimately want to ensure community safety by making sure lights, roads, and sidewalks are provided. Therefore, SC Infrastructure focuses on road development/repair, lighting installation/repair, and sidewalk creation/repair.

What Is Physical Wellness?

According to the University of New Hampshire physical wellness is making healthy choices when it comes to: Alcohol, Flu and Colds Prevention, Illness Prevention, Nutrition, Physical Activity and Body Movement, Sexual Health, Sleep and Stress Management. However, the definitions used by UNH is targeted toward college students and I am no college student…yet. Physical Wellness is connected to all seven categories of wellness. Physical wellness  should be; promoting proper care of our bodies for optimal health and functioning, manage all aspects of physical wellness  and keep a healthy balance between physical activity, social interaction, nutrition and mental well-being in order to keep the body at peak condition.

What have I Observed?

I do not consider myself to be a physically fit person however for six months I felt like I had to become just that. I had to record a series of tests and set a work out regimen. Initially I didn’t seem to feel so challenged by exercising daily however, around two weeks in I finally felt my muscles become extremely sore. I didn’t only exercise I ate a balanced meal everyday (which felt like a chore) and had either face to face conversations or calls instead of texts. I did notice that everyday tasks seemed easier and that even though I was almost always sore I felt like I had more energy toward the end of the day. I did observe a significant change in my eating habits and in my physical capability. The more I noticed the changes the more intrigued I became in answering the questions.

What Is Physical Wellness To Me?

Physical wellness can be describes as just simply  taking care of your body, however I have recently found new meaning to this term due to my recent experience. I used to think that physical wellness was exercising and keeping your body in shape however, there are many more aspects to physical wellness. Recently I’ve been working on merit badges for Boyscouts, one of the merit badges I’ve finished in the last month is the personal fitness merit badge. While working on this merit badge for the last six months I’ve learned that physical wellness is consisted of disease prevention, preventative habits, diet, mental health and social health. There were many things I needed to do and research in order to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.
